4 Reasons Community Service Isn’t Popular Amongst Teens

By: Olivia Estrada

Service is needed everywhere. Places such as the food depository, homeless shelter, and hospital are all examples of hot spots that are always looking for help. So where are all the teens? Oh yeah, Glee marathon was on today.

1.You don't want to wake up early.

So let's say your one of those people who constantly hit their snooze button. Yeah, you're a teen, it's reasonable that you like to stay out late. But it's also sensible that you should give back to your community.

On further not the days of "I just can't wake up that early" are over. There are plenty of places that need help even later on in the day. Don’t believe me?

Well the food bank in Chicago provides shifts and they happen to have a afternoon and evening shift. Also the soup kitchen serves dinner so help isn’t needed till 4:45 p.m.

2. Your friends aren't doing it.

Just because your friends don't want to try something new does that mean you wouldn’t like to?  Going somewhere you want to be a part of can lead you to meet others that like doing the same things you like to do. "It's true, I've met my boyfriend through City Year and we've been together for a year." -Alba, member of City Year.

3. You don't think you'll have fun.

It's impossible not to! It’s science, which makes it a fact!  It’s natural to feel good about yourself when you’re doing kind works for others. When this feeling comes out, how is it possible to not enjoy yourself?

4. You don't know where to go.

Maybe you have preferences. You want to help but you mind seeing blood at a hospital, you will be too tempted to sneak a bite at the soup kitchen, or you just want to find somewhere close to you. Well thankfully volunteer match takes this all into account. All you have to do is add in your location and add key words then it gives a description of sites.
